- A Bas Relief
of Annamcharya , Andhra Pradesh @
-
-
- Sri Annamcharya Swami was born in born in 1424A.D(1414?)
in TallapAka, a village in the Cuddapah district of Andhra Pradesh. From
a young age , he displayed extrodinary talent in poetry and music. He
used simple vocabulary, common everyday language, to convey the
truth shoused in the ancient scriptures.
-
- Although Annamcharya
composed krithis in praise of many archamuthis of Srimannarayana
, the Lord of his heart was Sri Venkateswara.Traditon has it
that he once ran away to Tirupati and fell asleep on a rock after
an exhausting climb of the first steep hill at Tirumala. There
he dreamt of Sri Padmavati Thayar ,The Consort of Sri Venkateswara
and and composed a Shataka in her praise.Upon reaching the lord's
abode atop the hill Annamacharya burst out in ecstatic praise
of the lord's ananta kalyana gunas.

-
- Annamcharya sought spiritual
guidance from Sri Athivan Satakopa Yatindra Maha Desikan
, the first pontiff of Ahobila Madam.Sri Athivan Satkopan
initiated him into the Sri Vaishnava Sampradayam through Samashrayanam
and Bahranyasam.Annamacharya also recieved the Nrisimha Ashtup
Moola Mantram in addition to the Rahasyatraya Mantras from Sri
Athivan Satakopan .
-
- *Sri Annamacharya undertook
an oath to compose one krithi everyday of his life in praise
of Lord Srinivasa. As a result, he composed 32,000 krithis most
of which are in praise of the Lord of Venkatachalam. The remaining
are in praise of Bhagavan Nrusimha. In his Krithis, Sri Annamacharya
brings out with consummate effect the tenets of Bhagavad Ramanuja
Darshanam as practised by Swami Desikan and Adivan Satakopa Yathi.
-
- A careful study of the
works of the great poet makes it evident that through his "Adhyatma
Sankeertanas", he has covered the fundamental concepts of
the Visishtadvaita Siddhanta such as sharanagati, bhakthi , the
role of kainkaryam, the concept of 'Daasaanu Daasatva', the role
of Lakshmi ( Sri) as mediator between jivathma and paramtma (
Lord Vishnu).
-
- Sri Annamacharya attained
paramapadam in 1503 .Of his 32,000 compositions only 14,000 are
available to us today. These are engraved on copper plates and
kept safely inside a room at Tirumala. Till this day a descendant
of Tallapka poets sings the compositons of Sri Annamcharya before
the image of Lord Venkateswara after the Suprabatha Seva at the
Tirupati.
-
- Annamacharya's legacy
is being preserved and propagated by charitable organizations
like SAPNA ( Saint Annamcharya Project North America) and Tirumala
Tirupati Devasthanam's Annamcharya Project Scheme. Devotees interested
may contact the above organizations for details.May Sri Athivan
Satakopa Swami and Annamacharya bless us with Bhakti and Vairagya
so we may attain the Daya of Lord Venkateswara quickly in the
new millenium.
